February Newsletter

It’s been an explosive start to the year at Outside Edge. All our groups are now back up and running regularly after the Christmas break and we have some new and exciting projects getting underway! The Company have started their new project with with Hannah Hauer-King (Artistic Director of Damsel Productions) and Edge Two have started their new module focused on the work of Brazilian Theatre Practitioner Augusto Boal. We also had a jam-packed January at Theatre Club and had some fantastic guests attend including: Matthew Brind (Composer) from ‘Only the Brave’, Anna Spearpoint and Louise Carter (Writers/Performers) from ‘The Fairytale Revolution’, Riaz Khan (Writer), Nikolai Foster (Director), Hareet Deol and Jay Varsani (Performers) from ‘Memoirs of an Asian Football Casual’ and Terry O’Donovan (co-Artistic Director of Dante or Die) from ‘USER NOT FOUND’.

The playwrights of Write Now created a collection of work that premiered last month at the Living Record Festival (see more details in the newsletter below). The pieces are available to watch until 22nd Feb, so you still have time to catch them!

We have more exciting news, new shows and upcoming events in February that we can’t wait to tell you more about…

The Company:
New Project with Hannah Hauer-King

In January The Company started a new project! This winter the group are working with Hannah Hauer-King, who is Artistic Director of Damsel Productions and has previously directed for Paines Plough, Royal Welsh School of Drama and Music, HighTide Festival, Papatango and Theatre503 amongst others. Members of The Company have started devising their new piece with Hannah at the end of January, so watch this space for performance information in March!

This group is made up of service users who have been attending Outside Edge for over a year and shown the commitment required to work as a member of an ensemble to create a public performance with a professional director.

Introducing ‘Friends in Feb’

In February we’re running a new ‘recommend a friend’ scheme. Friends will be invited on 10th & 12th February to our Drop-In Drama workshops! Service users are welcome to invite a friend they think might be interested to join our workshops on Zoom! You just need to provide OETC with an email address and first name for your friend (with their permission of course) and we’ll be on hand to welcome them before the workshop. Please send any details to the office email: admin@edgetc.org

Write Now – Living Records Festival

The playwrights of Write Now have created a collection of work that is premiering at the Living Record Festival (17th Jan until 22nd Feb). So you still have time to watch and support our participants!

Living Record Festival is a month-long digital art festival curating and presenting original pieces from a range of art forms by independent companies and freelance artists. You can find our piece ‘The Playwrights of Write Now’ in Volume Five of the festival. Tickets for this piece are free; you just need to click through and book a ticket.

Outside Edge’s writers in recovery will be presenting a selection of short scripts uniquely curated by Stewart Melton & Hannah Hauer-King with accompanying animation that will show the festive period in a new light. Through a bizarre but topical series of scenes and monologues, our playwrights will invite audiences on a dark, magical journey exploring feelings of loneliness and despair at the thought of a cancelled Christmas. We see the characters move through three months in the search of hope within the shadows.

Support our writers by attending our Living Records Festival and having a listen to their fantastic new work online…

Enhanced Covid-19 Safety Measures

During this challenging time, the physical and mental health of our service users, staff and the wider community is of utmost concern to us. The latest government guidelines continue to make an allowance for formally organised support groups that provide mutual aid, or any other form of support, for people in drug and alcohol recovery to remain open with up to 15 participants. Therefore, we have worked with our partners in Public Health and venue delivery partners to ensure that we will be able to continue offering Covid-safe, socially distanced in-person activities throughout the upcoming period of lockdown.

Although we will be able to continue to offer this essential service for some service users, we strongly encourage as many people as possible to access Outside Edge activities online and to only attend in-person if it is absolutely necessary. To that end, we will continue to make sure that all of our activities are accessible online and over the phone, as we have done over the past 10 months. If any of this information changes over the next month, then current service users will be contacted via email and SMS with updated details. New service users and friends of OETC should continue to check our website and social media for updates as the situation evolves.

To keep you as safe as possible we have made additional safety measures to our workshops, including compulsory booking a minimum of 4 hours in advance of a session, reduction in capacity resulting in increased distance between participants and face coverings must be worn during all activities (unless a service user has a valid exemption for this requirement).

‘Book-In’ don’t ‘Drop-In’- Reserve your space!

In line with social distancing guidelines we will need to limit the number of people who can be in the workshop space. You will need to book your space in advance of attending. Bookings will close 4 hour before the workshop’s start time. As with all of our activities it is free to attend, but if you have not booked, you will not be able to enter the workshop space.

Existing OETC members will have been sent a link to book a space for any of this month’s blended sessions via email or text. If you are new to OETC, register your interest here and Molly will be in touch.
