January Newsletter

Happy New Year and welcome to 2021 at Outside Edge!! We’ve taken some much needed rest over the past couple of weeks, because (as you’ll see below) last month was full of excitement with our Volunteer Peer Facilitators winning an award from the Mayor of London, our incredible Christmas Party and a bunch of fabulous productions. But now we’re rested up and ready to kick-start the year with even more excitement: delivering our first blended online/in-person Drop-in Drama session in Southwark this week, starting a new project with The Company and sharing more performances of our work with you! If you, or any service users you know, have made a New Year’s Resolution to be more creative, support recovery goals and make new friends, then check out our schedule of activities and we’ll see you at Outside Edge this month.

Covid-19 Update: Based on the latest government guidelines (accurate as of January 5th), we are still able to deliver blended in-person/online support group work. We will continue to offer this essential service for service users who require it, but we strongly encourage as many people as possible to access Outside Edge activities online until the national lockdown ends. For those of you that do need to attend in-person, find out about our heightened safety measures here

The Company:
New Project with Hannah Hauer-King

We’re excited to announce that plans are underway for our next project with The Company. This group is made up of service users who have been attending Outside Edge for over a year and shown the commitment required to work as a member of an ensemble to create a public performance with a professional director. Eligible participants for this project will be contacted via email. This winter the group will be working with Hannah Hauer-King, who is Artistic Director of Damsel Productions and has previously directed for Paines Plough, Royal Welsh School of Drama and Music, HighTide Festival, Papatango and Theatre503 amongst others. Members of The Company will start devising their new piece with Hannah at the end of the month, so watch this space for performance information in March!

Moving Recovery

Starting this month Outside Edge’s Moving Recovery Group led by Fallen Angels will be starting to create work for a performance in the Spring. Don’t worry if you haven’t tried out this amazing new group, you can still come along in January and get moving. But there is no time to waste as from February this group will not be accepting new participants.

Moving Recovery is generously supported by The National Lottery Community Fund. Thanks to the Government for making this possible.

Mayor of London Volunteering Awards: Winners!

Outside Edge’s Volunteer Peer Facilitators have won the Mayor of London Volunteering Awards!
This category recognised volunteering that supported organisational changes necessary to deliver services differently, to ensure vital support continued to be delivered during the crisis. This included more digital/online volunteering and phone services taking the place of previously face-to-face services. Volunteer activities that were adapted to ensure the sustainability of support services in the face of covid-19 adversities. You can hear more about the award from Mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, here…
A special thank you to Volunteer Peer Facilitators Liam Quinn, Sue Wilson & Billie Hands for all their hard work! We’re lucky to have you.

Write Now – Living Records Festival

The playwrights of Write Now have created a collection of work that will be debuted at the Living Record Festival from 17th Jan until 22nd Feb. Living Record Festival is a month-long digital art festival curating and presenting original pieces from a range of art forms by independent companies and freelance artists. Outside Edge’s writers will be presenting a uniquely curated selection of short scripts with accompanying animation that will show the festive period in a new light. Through a bizarre but topical series of scenes and monologues, our playwrights will invite audiences on a dark, magical journey exploring feelings of loneliness and despair at the thought of a cancelled Christmas. We see the characters move through three months in the search of hope within the shadows. Support our writers by attending our Living Records Festival and having a listen to their fantastic new work online.

Write Now is generously supported by The Mount Trust and:

Christmas Party!

We finished 2020 with a bang. Thank you to everyone who contributed to our Christmas Party in any way. Special thanks to Billie Hands for leading our Christmas Craft Corner, Christopher Holt and Gemma Rogers for singing some festive classics for us all. The festive cheer was felt by all and sent our service users into the festive season suitably jolly!

Edge Two – New Performance

Our Edge Two performers have devised an innovative performance recorded from both the rehearsal room and Zoom! This Square or That Square was inspired by the performers’ own experiences of the world today, was developed by the group and is now available to share with you. Congratulations Edge Two on your consistent ability to rise to the occasion and be creative in the face of challenges.
